Raffrey pipe band was formed in 1933 and in 1945 the pipe major spot was filled by William Wood. The band chairman at this time was Harry Martin and the secretary was Joe Shaw. In 1949 the band purchased new uniforms which made them look very smart marching to the competition arena line and on road parades.
During 1951 Raffrey secured four new drums at a cost of £100. Later on that year they added to their instrumentation by purchasing twelve new chanters. The active and enthusiastic ladies committee brought in a large amount of money to help pay for the new uniforms and instruments.

During the early 1950’s Raffrey’s pipers had established themselves as among the best in the country. They had great rivalry with Carrickmannon, Ballycoan and Ballygowan pipe bands. The band had many contest victories to their name, which included the All-Ireland second grade junior championship in 1952.

The Raffrey drummers were the best in Ireland, winning in Dublin with the full band placed second in the intermediate grade. they also won the style and appearance on that day!
According to the Leader newspaper: “when Raffrey step out down the road towards the church or back to Ballygowan the skirl of the pipes and the rallying note of their drums is heard across this pleasant piece of Ulster countryside.”
